Chapter 13

Almost two months after Derrick’s graduation, Angel came home from work to find dinner and a bottle of wine on the table.

“What’s the occasion?” she asked.

Derrick gave her a kiss. “Go ahead and get settled. We’ll talk over dinner,” he said.

Angel smiled as she scanned the dining area.

“Woman, will you hurry up?”

Angel giggled, then disappeared to the back of the condo. Once she returned, Derrick pulled out a chair for her. He served dinner before taking a seat at the opposite end of the table. “How was your day?” he asked.

“It was good. What about yours? Any luck finding a job?”

“Well, sorta,” Derrick said.

“What does that mean?”

“Angel, I’m seriously considering the military.”

“What? Where did this come from all of a sudden?” Angel asked.

“I thought I’d have a job by now, but I don’t, and it’s driving me nuts. I have things to do.”

Angel sat quiet for a moment, then said, “Derrick, you would have a job if you settled for less money than you anticipated making.”

“Honey, I went to school for four years to get a degree so I could earn a livable wage. I can work at a job with no degree and make what these people are trying to pay. If I join the military, I’ll be paid a decent salary from day one.”

Angel looked away. “Wait a minute,” Derrick she stated, looking back at him. “Let’s not make desperate moves. You have to be patient.”

“I have been patient,” Derrick stressed.

“Just give it a little more time, sweetie. Something will happen for you. I know it will.”

“Okay,” Derrick agreed. “Two weeks. If I don’t get a job within two weeks…” Derrick cut his sentence short, but Angel knew exactly what he was telling her.

They dismissed the subject and enjoyed dinner.

Three weeks later, Derrick took the military entrance exam and aced it. His mind was made up, and he was ready to make progress. Angel didn’t share his enthusiasm. Their disagreement had formed a wedge between them. While Derrick was preparing to leave, Angel had completely shut down. She refused to take part in or discuss any of his plans pertaining to the military.
